ROAD BLOG - LATIN AMERICA!

September 26, 2010

Hola!!!

Well, we are officially back in action! The Circle Tour continues on in Latin America for a very exciting 7 show run. The band hasn't been here since 2001 (as far as I know) and everyone on the crew and band is incredibly pumped to be going to such a unique and passionate market. Although it is only 2.5 week long run, it seems like we have been waiting for these dates since the beginning of the tour. A lot of people on the crew have never been down here, so it's a nice change of scenery and the chance to experience some new things! Personally, I am very excited to be using my Spanish again and try some amazing food!

So, after a long 6 week break, vaccinations, and a few Spanish lessons, the crew geared up for our long flights down to Mexico. We arrived there with 2 days until the show, so we were able to load in to the 50,000 person stadium with plenty of time. Things run a little differently south of the border and things take longer to explain and get done. With a little patience and a translator, we were all just fine though. The stadiums down here are much older than what we are used to in The US and Canada and they lack the common amenities.

Something about the rustic nature of it makes it feel more authentic though. One of the craziest things to me was that we had to load all of the office gear into a second story building using a forklift. Here we were loading 300lb cases onto a machine while hanging over the side of the building!

Outside of the stadium, there was a massive buzz around the show. Local faux merchandise booths popped up everywhere, and the surrounding area was surrounded by vendors selling everything from tshirts to churros. The culture there so fascinating; everyone is hustling and trying to make a buck.

Once the doors opened to the show, people ran down the paths to the stadium like it was a marathon. This venue in particular has several other stadiums around it and is part of a massive complex/race track, so people had to run for a while to get there. Once finally inside the gates, the stadium filled up like it had 1 million ants in it!

Before long, there were 40,000+ people rocking away to the local Mexican opening act. They played a few 80's covers, which I thought was cool, and then Bon Jovi hit the stage. After a 2.5 hour long set including 2 encores (yes he played "Always" to end the show!) the crowd was roaring. The Mexican fans were really enthralled and ate up every second of the performance. You can tell they had been waiting for a long time for us to return and they were very happy we had!

The following day, we flew on to San Jose Costa Rica for our next gig. It was s very long travel day that included a layover in Panama, and over 12 hours of travel. Once settled in to our Costa Rican hotel, we all grabbed dinner and called it a night.

Today we are loading into the Costa Rican Stadium and between rain, wind, mud, and port a potties (with no toilet paper), we sure have a fun day on our hands!

Wish us luck!!
